Watercolor Hummingbird Card

watercolor hummingbird card

Monday’s Hummingbird Cake Recipe  post had me thinking of hummingbirds,
so I decided to try my hand at watercolor painting one.

I lightly outlined the basic shape in pencil,
filled it in with some clean, clear water,
then loosely dropped in some paint.

When I was mostly pleased with it, and it was dry,
I adhered it to some vanilla card stock and made it into a little card.

Today my wish for you
is that you find some time
to do things you love
with people you love (even if that is yourself!)
at life in between.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

  1. Awesome. Did I understand correctly that you are self taught and that you just recently started to paint? You are so talented….and such an inspiration. I discovered you on some card making site, saw where you are from and started following you.(I live in Grove City-so we’re sorta like neighbors…haha)……Thanks for sharing, you brighten my day.

    • Thank you for the sweet compliment Stephanie. We are practically neighbors! 🙂

Yes I am just learning this on my own. I did my first ever watercolor painting a little over 2 months ago (you can check it out by doing a search on my site here entitled, “My First Watercolor” on April 4) LOL! It’s pretty awful. I try to watercolor paint something once a week and am trying to develop “my style.” We’ll see where it goes. Enjoying the journey and happy to have you here!

  2. How you could ever question your ability just amazes the heck outta me. Another gorgeous painting from someone obviously blessed with artistic talents !! Your loose style is beautiful and really lets the medium shine. I think you and watercolor are a match made in heaven, Jodi! Happy Wednesday! 💜💛💜

    • Thank you sweet Laura! I do kinda like this one. Not sure I could do it again… LOL! That’s the way it is with watercolor – the beauty of it – really – each piece is unique – at least for me. Maybe when you become expert – you can repeat what you do – but for me it is still hit and miss and sometimes good luck and other times YUK. 🙂

      • I totally hear you. I tried to recreate that Stormfront painting the other day and I couldn’t. I could come somewhat close but honestly they’re all unique. I was thinking I could try doing a hummingbird like this also but it would turn out totally different! Still I think this is a great subject for a painting like this, just because hummingbirds are so … you know, watery. lol. Great job! I’m glad you actually like this one. That Jim Carrey speech was so helpful for me – and I hope for you too. 💜

  3. Brilliant! The hummingbird is a little unfocused because of the watercolour medium, much like the hummingbird itself flying and darting around so quickly.

  4. Jodi this is stunningly beautiful! I highly recommend you scan in the original so you can make copies of it. I’d BUY this card! Love how you painted the wings and used the paint to show movement! WOWZA! You go girl! 💜🎨🌈🌟😊

    • Thanks Jill – and it’s a BIRD! 🙂 How do you do that – scan original and make copies? You mean just on a copier? I am quite pleased with this one. Afraid I can’t do it again! 😐

      • Do you have a scanner on your computer printer? If you do, you can scan the image into your computer so you have a record of it. You can then print a color copy of it yourself or take it to a print shop. After you scan it, you may need to lighten the image a little – do you have photoshop or something like it? And I think you can probably do it again. Taking progress photos will help you remember what you did. One of my teachers said if you like it, paint another one! It is only paint! And you might like the next one even better! ❤️

  5. Beautiful painting Jodi, I’m learning to use water colour on my art pages, I’ve done this before, the water first and then the paint, I’ll try it, but maybe I should get a water colour paper, I have a mixed media one, which kind do you use?

  6. Hi Jodi,

I’m reviewing posts I’ve missed in the last few days. I am so glad I took the time to do so. Glad I didn’t miss this one. Your hummingbird painting is beautiful! You managed to portray hummingbird essence on watercolor paper. Your trademark splatters are so hummingbird.

    Love it.
