Why?

monochrome black and white leaves trees

Why do I get a little knot in my stomach
when the days grow a bit shorter,
the air a bit crisper,
the breeze a bit lighter.

It is gentle
and beautiful
and comfortable.

But my heart remembers
summer ending,
school beginning,
Autumn breezes bringing school buses
and schedules and new beginnings.

I recall old endings…

and I am melancholy.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

    • You get it too, George? I’m smiling thinking of the sweet photo of you and Matthew sitting at the ocean. My heart grew 100 times more love for you after seeing and reading that. I knew you were a good egg! Give that funny sweetheart a tight hug from Mrs lifeinbetween 🙂

    • You get it too Kathy? I love the colors and the temperature and fall baking and there is so much to love about Fall, but I always get a sad, melancholy feeling when it begins. I seriously go back to when the kids were little and I hated sending them back to school. The best of days. 🙂

  2. …touchingly put, Jodi, thanks. Truthfully, I can’t wait. The shorter days are thrilling. The advent of Autumn is nothing short of electric (for me) as that incomparable blue of an autumn sky, the harvest and canning, being able to once again use the porch as a fridge and then a freezer, the fall community fairs, the apples, favourite recipes, the glorious colours, the coming of multiple memorable holidays, the coming to an end of motorcycle gunnings and dust and forest fires and smoky air, extreme thunderstorms, bugs, rashes, hiding from the heat….oh yeah. Bring it. And then the most wonderful of all Seasons–WINTER. yes! (big smile)

  3. I’m so sad that fall makes you sad. :(((( I really agree wholeheartedly with Lance. The sights, smells, the crispness of the air that fills one with energy instead of sluggishness (this is my most favorite part), but the leaves alone. Nothing else but the leaves. And fires in the fireplace?! And Steelers football?! Jodi, Jodi……what could be better? Foodies love the eating holidays too! Thanksgiving? Doesn’t it make you wanna run and camp out near your oven so you can smell the wonderful pies baking? Apple cobblers and crisps…..man. I’m like Lance, hiding from the heat because it makes me feel bad. But there are endless things to love about fall. The clear beautiful skies with the leaves and driving down meandering country roads to catch a glimpse of the foliage around the next bend……..oh, I could literally write a poem about autumn. I love it with every cell in my body. I hope I’ve given you something to look forward to, my friend! 💛💛💛 <—for the Steelers. 😽👍👏😊

  4. You have certainly caught the emotion of the coming season. Not as beautiful abu it is Dr. Doolittles “pushme, pull me.” I want it to stay summer, but I do love fall. Hugs.

  7. You captured it so well !
Fall always brings a melancholy and unease around here. And yet I also feel a great excitement about the beginning of the school year and a new routine and all the good things Autumn brings. So many decades after actually being in school I still feel that the New Year starts in Autumn, definitely not in January . 🙂
