“Imagine what our real neighborhoods would be like
if each of us offered,
as a matter of course,
just one kind word
to another person.”
-Mr. Rogers
Over the holidays, Hubby and I made a visit to our local Pittsburgh Smithsonian-affiliate museum – the Heinz History Center.
One of the highlights for me was the special exhibit of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – one of my favorite childhood television shows.
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was filmed in Pittsburgh for three decades from 1968 – 2001. The compassion, patience, morality, and advocacy for important public causes Fred Rogers taught is embedded in my heart and soul.
As I viewed the exhibit,
reminisced about the home of X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat,
gazed at the castle of King Friday XIII, Queen Sara Saturday, and Prince Tuesday,
and was transported by Trolley to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe,
I dreamed of a World neighborhood where kind words were spoken…..
and love was shared….
and this song stayed in my head…..
“It’s You I like.
It’s not the things you wear.
It’s not the way you do your hair.
But it’s You I like,
the way you are right now,
the way down deep inside you.
Not the things that hide you…
Its You
I like.”
Can’t we all get along?
Can’t we all accept each other?
Thank you Mr. Rogers.
Your wisdom transcends time, age, color, race, gender, identity, religion, ethnicity.
It’s You
I
Like.
Cheers & Hugs

My kids used to watch this show when they were little, I liked too, so peaceful and different from today’s shows.

Mr Rogers was always under appreciated by adults. Kids got him because they see what adults don’t..:) great post.

I never watched Mr Rogers as a kid because it didn’t air on the Canadian channels we had (watched Sesame Street and Electic Company though) but I love the values he embodied!

I remember during the Boston Marathon bombings their was an post going around if Mr. Rogers on FB and Twitter. It said basically, that in bad situations to “look for the helpers.” This line has stuck with me. When I see things going wrong in the world or in my life I think of that line. Sounds like it was an interesting exhibit and I’m glad you liked it.

Yes – I recall that too, Mandi! Such great words of wisdom – geared towards children, but that we adults would do well to heed also. That was such a great quote – especially at that time. It has stuck with me too! Hugs!

How wonderful you were able to see the exhibit and relive a bit of your childhood! I was grown up by the time Mr. Rogers began but I’ve always admired his message and values.

Thanks Carol – he surely was a great role model. And my maiden name was Rodgers, so he was kinda even more special – even though we were not related 🙂

Just a simple thought, but one that is so very powerful. Fred Rogers was the real deal, nothing artificial about the man, and I think that was part of his appeal to kids, and why I believe our kids loved him. :O)
