The Rusty Old Bridge
Your shiny metal has weathered to shades of orange and brown
like skin that has worked and played and laughed in the sun.
Your concrete pillars are beginning to crack under pressure
like wrinkles of worry from the stress of supporting such a heavy load.
You connected two sides – one with the other
as if you had open and outstretched arms.
And now,
though your original purpose is abandoned,
you still serve,
but in subtler ways.
a shady spot for respite from the heat
or a lazy day of fishing.
It’s time to rest Rusty Old Bridge.
You’ve earned this time.
Enjoy it
while I admire you.
Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi
Nice. π

I’m sure I have. There are so many, many bridges in Pittsburgh and although they cause a lot of traffic congestion, I really love the bridges. They all have different “personalities”. I find them fascinating.

The rust creates a beautiful pattern in contrast with the sky. (K)

Thanks Debi – I guess as I am now in the second half of life π – I try to look at things differently – and I love the beauty of aged things – even people – just hard time admiring that in myself – but working on appreciating it. I wanted to compare it to us humans as we age and the beauty we can find in it – and admire. Still on the road, but home soon π

LOVE this picture with personality, Jodi, and your poem is just perfect! I like the contrast how life goes on with a fisherman under the old bridge while this bridge is no longer “living”. Nice!!!

Oh how I would love to! We will see! I have been traveling with work this week, so had a few photos and posts scheduled. Not much painting time this week. But it has been a lovely business trip with and visiting with great co-workers!

Jodi, you have such a wonderful way with words, such a nice way to stop and think about things we always don’t make time for, it it weren’t for you, we’d miss the best things in life that are truly free, why don’t you write for the paper? I so love and enjoy your everyday blogs! Thank you for sharing, one of your fans!

Aww this reminds me of a bridge I can see from my office window that overlooks the river. It was decommissioned to a footbridge only many years ago, and now they are going to replace it with a new footbridge. It will be sad to see this part of my city’s history go away. I watch people jump off of it all summer long into the river, even though it’s illegal, lol!

What a great perspective on aging! Rusting bridges, aging people….all changing, all showing wear and tear, but still beautiful and still having a purpose. You certainly made this aging woman feel a bit better about herself this morning! Thanks!
