You may house their bodies, but not their souls…

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow…

-Kahlil Gibran

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day.
Last Saturday my youngest “child” got married.
My greatest honor in life has been being a mother.
But as this wise verse from Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet reminds me,
I may have housed their bodies, but I cannot house their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow.

I am so proud of the men my boys have become.
As I watched the youngest celebrate marriage, and the oldest toast his brother last weekend,
my heart swelled.
Somehow we managed to do a good job.
And I couldn’t have done it without my husband – their father – by my side.

As I look at this photo I took at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago of a Momma Duck (made of flowers by the way) and her little ducklings, I was once again reminded of the privilege I was bestowed in life to be a mother.  I am now also blessed with two beautiful “daughters”-in-law and the great privilege of being a “grand”mother.

I am so grateful.

Here’s to all the moms out there!
Cherish the moments.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

This’ll be the Day

sunrise-thistle-feb-2017

This’ll be the Day.

This’ll be the day
I will seek and find
beautiful things
in humble places….

Things that have been there
all along,
but I didn’t take the time
to notice.

This’ll be the day
I will look in the mirror when I rise
and say, “Hello Beautiful”
instead of “Ugggghhhh!”

I will focus
on the things
I like about myself
instead of the things I don’t.

This’ll be the day
I consciously decide
to seek
simple moments to cherish.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

How many sunsets

Sunset Geneva on the Lake July 2016

Sunset – Geneva on the Lake, Ohio – #GFCGeneva2016 – Girlfriend Camp

How many sunsets will it take….

until I grow tired of watching sunsets?

until I stop gasping and gazing in wonderment?

until I realize the power and size and magnitude of this beautiful star?

until I appreciate each and every moment given to me in the day that preceded it?

How many sunsets will it take?

How many sunsets will I be given?

Cherish the moments.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

First Day of Spring

vase of pink tulips

Today is the first day of Spring!

Spring always brings with it such energy,
such hope,
the possibility of renewal.

We are awaiting our first McHendy grandchild (my BF’s daughter is due any moment).

I am also mourning the tragic loss of a grandchild to other very good friends.

Life is so precious.
So fragile.
Cherish the moments.

Hugs,
Jodi

Thank You!

Happy New Year friends, and thank you for being here with me this past year at lifeinbetween.me!

I had fun with one of my Christmas gifts from hubby – my new art easel – one day this week on my holiday break and spent a little time watercolor painting.

I thought it was a good time to design a holiday thank you note,

so I goofed around with a few loose pine tree designs that I can copy and create cards from.

Wishing you a happy new year filled with many moments to cherish!  Take the time to notice them,

to appreciate them,

to truly cherish them –

for it is these moments

that create a lifetime.

Pink Clouds and Puddles

pink sky and puddles

One day last week

when it seemed to rain all day

the sky cleared up just enough

right before dusk

for Charlie and I to walk to the mailbox

at the end of the driveway

for a bit of a stretch

and the chance to deeply inhale

the damp, crisp, clean air.

When we turned around

to head back home

my jaw dropped open

and a gasp escaped

when this was the sight

that awaited our return.

Pink clouds and puddles

shimmering in the day’s last light.

No white Christmas,

but what is wrong with PINK?!

Cherish the moments of now.

Cheers & Hugs,

Jodi

The kind of day…

waterfall in creek franklin pa

Wishing you the kind of day
that offers you the time to ponder
the things that touch your heart,
that stretch and broaden your mind.

The kind of day
that allows you to recognize
the beautiful surprises –
whether simple or profound

that are right before your eyes,
singing in your ears,
pleasing to your nose,
soft to your touch,
warming to your heart,
soothing to your soul.

Cherish the moments
that are just waiting
to be discovered
today
and
every day
at life in between.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Break of Dawn

At one of my favorite places in the whole wide world…

shovels in the greenhouse at dawn

mostly because I am with some of my favorite people in the entire universe…

I arose at the break of dawn…

sunflowers at dawn

to bask in the beauty…

zinnia at dawn

and to cherish the moments.
