Waiting for Paint to Dry

Woodland River Line and Wash Joanne Boom Thomas Watercolor Tutorial by Jodi McKinney First 9 x 12 1115 1

I am TRYING to learn
to wait for paint to dry.

It’s harder than you think!

This is my first 9 x 12 watercolor painting –
my largest to date.

It was done following a line and wash tutorial on ArtTutor by Joanne Boon Thomas.

AND with my very first few tubes of Winsor & Newton Professional Artist watercolor paint. OOOO LA LA!!
I treated myself to four tiny tubes – and was so excited to use Prussian Blue!

I see several things I would have liked to do different,
but it was a good practice in patience…

A practice in background, midground, and foreground…

Who knew it could be so fun…. waiting for paint to dry!!??!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

  1. Love the reflections in the water! WOWZA! Look at you go, girl!!! πŸŽ¨πŸ˜„πŸ’– I have difficulty waiting for the paint to dry too – you can use a blow dryer on low heat to speed the drying process. Or if the weather is nice, I sometimes will place my painting in the sun for a few minutes. Happy you are taking a class and enjoying it AND doing so well at it! 😊

  2. I love it! The color scheme is lovely, as are the reflections, and composition. It’s a big scary painting on such a large canvas isn’t it! You did very well with the size, and values I think. I hope you frame it!

I totally understand how exciting it was to receive, and open those tubes of paint. I felt pretty much the same when my Turner watercolors arrived. I had so much fun setting up my palette, and squeezing a bit paint into each pan. I felt like an artist for a brief moment. πŸ™‚

  3. has Charlie been a naughty boy, sent to the dog house?! miss him πŸ™‚ I had a couple thoughts: you’d said you wanted to try to paint McConnell park photo; I’ve looked at it again. what if you did 6 warms up, divided the image into 6 sections & painted each as individuals? getting a feel for parts… vs overwhelmed with the whole thing? then – you could more confidently do the whole image! just thinking it’d be easier…. lol cheers, Debi

    • Awh! Thanks for asking about Charlie, Deb! He’s been being a pretty good boy these days – just the usual mischief, and he’ll be checking in soon. πŸ™‚ That is a very good idea about dividing the photo into 6 parts. I would not have thought of that. I will add that to my to do list. wish me luck! πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for thinking of strategies to help me grow and improve.
