Into the Woods in our Backyard June 25, 2017 Mars, PA

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Yesterday was one of those
most amazingly glorious
Summer Sundays.

No agenda,
bright sunshine,
cool breeze.

I woke early,
sipped my coffee on the deck
with the birds and the rising sun.

I made old-fashioned macaroni salad
to chill and be just right
to accompany grilled burgers for dinner.

I took my watercolors
out onto the patio,
and I painted for hours.

And when it was time to move a bit,
Charlie and I headed to the woods
in our backyard.

We hiked until we got lost,
and then we found our way out through a neighbor’s backyard
on an intersecting street to ours.

It was a sauntering walk
with stops to breathe it all in, smell the fresh air,
and commune with nature.

The woods are a great place
to learn how truly small you
and your problems really are.

It’s a place to be small,
but come out feeling bigger
and better and complete.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

  1. Jodi, you inspire with your art and writings every day. I’m going to draw my grandkds in pastels after looking at your granddaughters watercolor.

It’s hard to be inspired when the heat here in Phoenix is 124 and your AC isn’t working well. Here’s a story I wrote on my other blog. Please follow and share if you wouldn’t mind.

What part of the country do you live in? The hubby and I were wondering based on your photos of your house.

    Have an inspirational day!

    • How sweet are you?!!? Thanks! I will check it out. We live in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh in a little town called Mars 😉. We are heading to Scottsdale and Sedona in a few weeks. Yikes to the temps! Will be at a nice spa and resort while hubby conferences 😉

  2. Sounds like a glorious day! 🌲🌞 A walk in the woods always clears my head too! We had a gorgeous weekend as well. Saturday was the best day – no agenda and we floated in our boat at the lake. Just so relaxing! 😊

  3. What a glorious walk in the woods, Jodi! Reminds me of childhood in Maine when walks in the woods with a German Shepherd was a standard activity. Loved the freedom to wander back then. Thanks! 🌺🌷🌸 Christine
