National Healthcare Decision Day – Choices for your Journey

Today is National Healthcare Decision Day.  This is something quite near and dear to my heart and something I am passionate about.

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) exists to inspire, educate and empower the public about the importance of advance care planning. NHDD is an initiative to encourage individuals to express their wishes regarding healthcare and for healthcare providers to respect those wishes, whatever they may be. The theme for 2016 is “It Always Seems Too Early, Until It’s Too Late.”

The National Healthcare Decision Day website has a multitude of resources that I highly recommend you check out at this link.  I also recommend a project that I helped work on called the Journey GPS (Getting Plans Started) Guide.  You can download it free at this link.  It is a great resource for starting the conversation and carrying out your wishes for the way you want to experience your journey at end of life when that time comes.  The #NHDD theme this year is so poignant and true:  It always seems too early, until it is too late!

Take some time today to consider your choices, and let your loved ones know.  You deserve to have the right care at the right time in the right place no matter where you are in this crazy journey we call life.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Opening Up

white tree blossoms

Open your eyes.
Close your narrow views.

Open your ears.
Close your inner negative thoughts.

Open your mind.
Close your ignorance.

Open your heart.
Close your hate.

Open your arms.
Close them in a hug.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

A Pansy for your Thoughts

pansies

Can you remember
who you were
before the world
told you who
you should be?

Be brave
and be that person.
It is undoubtedly
the best you
you can be.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

A Pink Flamingo for Draw a Bird Day

pink flamingo watercolor1

Although some blogger friends and I celebrate #DrawABirdDay every eighth of the month, April 8th is the OFFICIAL Draw A Bird Day, so I wanted to do something extra flashy and a little out of the ordinary – a Pink Flamingo!

Bright pink to open your eyes
and wish you a cheery flamingo kind of day,
a Happy Friday,
a Happy #DrawABirdDay!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Beauty in the Cracks

in the cracks stone wall flowers

The other evening
after dinner,
I went outside
to breathe in
the gentle fragrance
of the Spring air
and dig my fingers
into the warming earth
to clear the leaves and twigs and “weeds”
in preparation for planting
flowers and herbs and vegetables.

In the crack of the stone wall
in the landscape where nothing should grow
and where I tend to pull out things
that do not “belong,”
I decided to leave this tender
flowering plant
that added life
and its own kind of beauty
when you look at it for what it simply is.

Like life in between,
where I cherish the moments,
I cherish the beauty
in the cracks of life.

The crack in the chip
of an heirloom antique cow creamer,
or the crack in the humor
of a “dig” or a joke from one of my guys.

The crack in the corner of the lips
of a friend’s smile when they see me,
or the crack in the voice of my Dad
when we reminisce
about times we’ve spent together
or the times we sadly missed.

The cracks in the corners of
hubby’s (and even my) eyes
that show we have lived and loved and laughed
throughout the years.
(not to mention another cute crack
when he bends over without a belt!)

There truly is beauty
in the cracks of life
if only we open our eyes to see
the tiny little joys
in the cracks in between.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Be Kind

Be Kind Rose

Why does there have to be

So much fighting…
So much hatred…

Politics.
Religion.

In a world where
you can be anything,

Be Kind.

It’s really not that hard.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Forsythia

forsythia

Forsythia…

for bursting buds,

for warm sunshine,

for bright blue skies,

for puffy clouds,

for greener grass,

for gentle breeze,

for birds singing,

for longer days,

for Easter’s near.

First signs of Spring.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

More AND Less

thoughts at dusk

Thoughts at dusk while riding home from a celebration of life service for a young girl whose life was cut short much too soon…

More presence –
Less distraction.

More compassion –
Less indifference.

More generosity –
Less accumulation.

More tolerance –
Less narrow-mindedness.

More kindness –
Less cruelty.

More love –
Less hate.

Cherish the moments!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Cloudy

in the clouds

Cloudy with thoughts of…
cottony comfort
feathery fluffiness,
delicate dreams.

Cloudy with the opportunity to…
embrace the breeze,
find comfort in the shadow,
feel the freedom to fly.

Cloudy with a chance of…
clear thoughts,
a bright future,
a sunny attitude.

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi
