A Christmas Deer, Dear

Watercolor deer

It’s a Christmas Deer, Dear.

One of the best things about art and painting and watercoloring is the freedom to create an image however you want…

Christmas Reindeer can be purple with a turquoise ear right?

This is one of my Christmas card designs that I learned how to print and duplicate.  Yay me!

(It is inspired by some artwork I found on Flickr, but darn if I can find it now to cite!)

Nevertheless, the countdown is on, and we are into single digits until the BIG day.   I have never been so late getting cards done, gifts bought, cookies baked, food made….. and I have never enjoyed it more!

Whatever gets done, mailed, baked, cooked is what it is.  As long as I get to spend time with those I love is all that matters.

Cherish the moments.

Merry Christmas Deer/Dear!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Thanksgiving Family Photo Shoot

s14

We had the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving this year with some very special family members.

s19

And I got to have fun playing with my camera afterwards doing a little family photo shoot.

s18

Little Mason was being a bit of a “stinker,” but oh what fun will this photo be to look back on a few years from now – eh?!  (Heck – it’s even pretty funny now!)

s20

It was a gorgeous day at the Lake House, so we took full opportunity to goof around outside and run…

s21

and walk…

s23

and take in views of the glistening lake.

s9

Ella is growing into quite the young lady, and we have such a special relationship.

s2

But nothing can beat riding the tire swing with your brother when you are 8 and 5 years old – right?!

s38

Remember those Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Turkeys I made?

Two thumbs up from these turkey lovers.

Poppy and Mason Thanksgiving 2015

Our amazing hosts and our dearest family set out a beautiful and delicious feast.

And Mason beat Mimi in a game of chess afterwards while the rest of us played Apples to Apples (and Oh Rob lost!).  Ohhhhh Roooob!

The next day brought setting up for “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the town center, so I had a chance to snag another photo of three of my favorite girls…

and two of my favorite guys.

It’s December 1st and time to get ready for our family’s next big holiday celebrations for Christmas!

It is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!”

Lunch Time with Charlie

Charlie walk

These are a few of my favorite things:

  1. Breakfast
  2. Dinner
  3. Lunch

#1 and #2 are pretty obvious…  Time to EAT!

Woohoo!  Yahoo!   Woot!  Woot!  Yippee Yo Ki Yay!

#3 – now this one is a little different….

at least for me…

Most of you lucky ducks reading this are fortunate enough to get to eat AGAIN at lunch time.

Mom tells me, however, that dogs only get to eat at Breakfast and Dinner.  (heavy dog sigh)

But…..

Lunch time can be pretty darn glorious (at least if it is a day Mom works from her home office and it is not raining – or she is not feeling toooooo laaazzzy!)….

We get to go for a WALK!

That wonderful, amazing, magnificent four-letter word that can only be spoken within 10 seconds of the actual event occurring!  WALK!!!!

Oh the wonderful smells and sights and people and activity!  It’s a wonderful part of a dog’s life – – – W…. A…. L…. K….  One of the greatest words ever.

If we are lucky, I get to see some of my friends on our walk.

I really, really, really love the little ones that Mom calls “kids.”

They are fun because they are just my size and they like to run fast like me, and they  are always so happy.

Sometimes I get to see other dogs and cats on my walk too – some are friendly – some not so much…  (Mom says we just have to “leave it” when we go by them!)

One of the stupidest parts of walks are a thing called “cars.”

Every single time one of them interferes with my walk along the road, Mom makes ME get “over” and lets them go by!  Seriously?!  The nerve!  Don’t they know this is MY walk!?!

While I’m busy sniffing and smelling, Mom is usually looking around.  Lately, she has been going on and on about how “wonderful” the weather has been.  Yesterday it was 64 degrees F on our walk.  Mom says this is unseasonably warm for mid-November in Mars.  She goes on and on about how beautiful the sky is and how warm the breeze is.

Yesterday, she got all excited because she saw these yellow flowers she called “Forsythia” that were blooming.  We had to stop (in the middle of my walk!) to take a picture of them.  Puleeeezee!

Mom says Forsythia bloom in the Spring time in Mars, and it is almost Winter here, so this is very unusual.

Forsythia in November

Whatever!

We usually walk about two or three miles at Lunch time, and I try very hard to walk “nice” and not pull.  When I do, Mom yells, “Easy,” and I have to tow the line.

But… when we get back to my free space however…

that wonderful space that Mom refers to as “Charlie’s Yard”…

she takes the leash off, and I get to “zoom!”

Zoom Zoom Zoom!

Aren’t the zoomies the best?!

Zoomies are the reward for walking nice and “easy!” It is a chance to run like the wind – round and round – until I can run no more.

Then…. I go in the house (Mom says this is “home”).

I get a big drink of water…. and I am a happy boy… and I wait….

for the next best time of day…..

Dinner!

Woofs & Wags,
Charlie

A Royal Flush

image

You know you are a  blogger when.………

your family bribes you with permission to use their photos if you will do them a favor.

image

Which is what happened a couple of weeks ago.

image

“Hey Mom, if we send you pictures and let you post them on your blog, will you paint us a set of Royal Flush t-shirts for Halloween costumes?” asked my youngest son, Nick (the King of Spades above) with his sweet Liz (the Queen) standing nervously beside him.

Trying to wait for at least a few seconds to pass before too eagerly blurting out…

Sure!

Under breath – “YIPPEE!  Theme party ideas!  The kids still need me!  They are asking ME to help!  Painting!  Crafting!  Creating!”

Liz smiles sheepishly,  “Are you sure?”

Nick replies, “SEE!  I told you!  She loves this stuff.”

image

And the happy King and Queen partied on happily ever after.

And I’m pretty sure by the look on my son’s face in this one that this photo was likely taken well into the party!

I LOVE IT!

And them.

And SSSSHHHHHH!  Don’t tell them….

but I would have done it even without the bribe!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Thanks for letting me do it gang!
What are we doing next year?
Oh – – – I am so too eager….….

Pumpkins Doodlewash Card by Jodi McKinney

These fabulous doodlewashed handmade greeting cards come to us direct from Mars! Okay, the doodlewash movement hasn’t moved from global to galactic…yet… but these do come from the lovely Jodi McKinney (follow her on Instagram!) who lives in Mars, Pennsylvania, a small town close to Pittsburgh. The doodlewashes Jodi has provided here today are originals created just for this guest doodlewash post! (editors note: Yay! Our first exclusive!)

Jodi says, “I was shocked that Charlie considered me ‘artistic’ enough to be a Guest Doodlewasher!  Shocked and SUPER humbled and flattered! I do not consider myself an artist (okay I am starting to..editor’s note: Good! you better!) . I have no formal training in art. I have no formal education in art… my last art class was in 5th grade elementary school.”

As we know, training can help, but it’s mostly just a constant drive, passion…

Snail Mail

snail mail watercolor card

Who remembers the nursery rhyme about what little boys are made of?

Snips and snails and puppy dog tails. (What is a snip anyway???)

Well – not sure about a snip, but I thought a snail would be fun to paint in watercolor, and I had a little boy I needed to send a birthday “snail mail” card to.

It was fun to make a colorful snail for a very colorful little boy.

Don’t underestimate the power of snail mail….

Doesn’t it make your day when you receive a card or note in the mailbox?  It is so rare anymore, but oh the joy – oh the appreciation we feel when we receive a handwritten – or better yet a handmade note or card.  Right?

Want to do something EXTRAordinary?  Send someone a handwritten “snail mail” note or card today?  I guarantee you will make their day!  🙂

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Cause, baby, you’re a firework

fireworks

This past weekend was our local Cranberry Township Community Days.

One of the highlights of this event is the fireworks display that occurs on the last evening of the three-day celebration.

Cranberry Township Community Day used to occur on July 4th (Independence Day) every year, so the fireworks display has become a tradition and symbol of this celebration.

Hubby works for Cranberry Township.   So for the past 15 or so years, we have had front row “reserved” seats for the show.

In fact, we are so close that we have been hit with ash and get to “enjoy” the sulfur smell of the explosives as they light up the sky.

It’s all part of the fun and adventure!

Photographing fireworks is quite difficult.  I should have researched and studied a bit, and I should’ve taken a tripod!

But here is one that represents a snippet of the fun and beauty of the night.

It was a great show, and a great celebration of a wonderful community.

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend – finding time to relax and celebrate – all the traditions, symbols, and activities that make life so sweet – at life in between.

Cheers & Hugs,

Jodi
