Jodi’s Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies

I created and started baking this super yummy cookie years ago by taking my old reliable base cookie recipe and adding dried blueberries and white chocolate chips.

Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies 2

It has become a favorite of hubby’s and some of my other cookie-lovin’ friends.  I was surprised to realize I had not posted this recipe here yet, so I’m excited to share it with you.

If you are looking for a unique and delightful treat, you really should try this cookie.  I have been hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t like these!

Dried blueberries can be a bit pricey, but Trader Joe’s is a great source of delicious and reasonable ones.  And they are sooooo worth it once you’ve taken a bite of this cookie!

Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies 3

Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies

4 sticks (1 lb.) butter, softened
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 1/2 cups white granulated sugar
2 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp salt
5 cups all purpose flour
1 12-oz bag Nestle Premier White Chocolate Chips (or your favorite)
1 8-oz bag Trader Joe’s dried blueberries (or your favorite brand)

Directions:

With electric mixer, beat butter and sugar together until completely incorporated. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat until light and fluffy. Add baking soda and salt, and mix another minute. Gradually add flour and beat until well incorporated, but do not overbeat.

Fold in white chocolate chips and blueberries. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days.

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees F. With your hands, form a cookie dough ball about 1-1/2 inches in diameter.  Place on baking stone. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Do not overbake. Allow to cool on baking stone for 2-3 minutes, then remove to cooling rack to cool completely.

Can you even handle the yumminess of these Cinnamon Churro Ice Cream Sundae Bowls?

cinnamon churro ice cream bowl sundae 2

Cinnamon Churro Bowl Ice Cream Sundae

On Sunday, my son, Nick, saw this gif recipe on Reddit and decided he wanted to try it.  It was an unseasonably cold “Spring” day.  I was feeling a bit under the weather feeling a head cold starting and making some of my favorite remedy – homemade chicken noodle soup.

I perked up when he said he wanted to try and watched and gave him a few pointers along the way.

So often you see these amazing-looking recipes on Pinterest or Reddit or other blogs that look so pretty and are made to look so easy, but when you go to make them…… well….  not so great.  I wasn’t expecting much when Nick began piping the batter around the bottoms of the cupcake pan, but had my fingers crossed and encouraged his desire to give it a try.

We were amazed at how easily they came off the pan and fried up to a golden brown.

And we were even more blown away by how amazing they tasted!  What a special treat!  These could very easily be made ahead and frozen for a special occasion.

And any occasion would be made special with these yummy treats.

Thanks, Nick!   You made a “down” day a bit brighter for me to help and photograph, and Dad was very happy to enjoy eating.

Hope you will give these a try.

Churro Ice Cream Bowls

Ingredients:cinnamon churro ice cream bowl sundae

1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
Non-stick cooking spray
oil for frying
cinnamon sugar
ice cream
hot fudge or caramel or your toppings of choice

6-12 cup muffin pan

Directions:

In a medium saucepan over medium/high heat, add butter, brown sugar, salt, and water. Bring to a boil. As soon as the butter has fully melted and the mixture begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium/low and add in flour. Using a wooden spoon, stir until the dough comes together into a ball (about 1 minute). Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes before proceeding to the next step (to prevent accidentally cooking the eggs).

Mix in the vanilla extract. Add in the eggs, one at a time, being sure to fully incorporate each egg before adding the next. Once all the eggs are incorporated, transfer it to a piping bag.

Invert a muffin pan and spray thoroughly with non-stick cooking spray. Pipe the dough around the inverted cups in spirals to form the bowls. Immediately transfer the tray to the freezer and freeze until solid (about 3 hours).

Heat oil in a deep pot to 350˚F (175˚C). Remove the muffin tin from the freezer and use a small knife under the bottom edge to help release the churro bowls.

Fry them in batches or one at a time, until nicely browned – about 2-3 minutes, flipping once. Be sure to carefully tip them into the oil so they sink to the bottom. Once desired color is reached remove them from the oil to a paper towel lined plate. Sprinkle with or roll in a cinnamon sugar mixture. Fill with you favorite ice cream and toppings. Enjoy!

Jodi’s Mediterranean Crockpot Chicken

Jodis Meditteranean Crockpot Chicken 1

I love chicken, and I love easy crockpot recipes – especially for days you know you are going to be busy, but want a nice, healthy meal at the end of the day.

Crockpot recipes are often thought more about in the winter and often with heavier, creamier sauces, but I love how light and healthy this recipe turned out that was born out of simply searching the pantry one morning last week for what to throw together.

Jodis Meditteranean Crockpot Chicken

I daresay this is good enough for company, yet simple enough for any ole’ weeknight dinner.

Best of all, you can throw it together in about 10 minutes in the morning and forget about it until dinnertime.

Hope you give it a try and enjoy!

Jodi's Mediterranean Crockpot Chicken

Ingredients:Jodis Meditteranean Crockpot Chicken 1

  • 6 frozen chicken breasts (or your favorite cuts – thighs, legs, whole cut up parts)
  • 1 12 oz. jar Marinated & Quartered Artichoke Hearts ( I used DeLallo)
  • 1 12 oz. jar Sweet Roasted Red Peppers (I used Mancini)
  • 3 oz. (1/4 cup) Capers (I used Roland Capers in Sherry Vinegar)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp Italian Seasoning (oregano, basil, parsley, thyme blend)
  • 1/2 cup white wine (I used a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that was open, but any kind would do, or you could substitute chicken broth)

Directions:

Layer all ingredients in crockpot in order listed above.  Cook on low for 6-8 hours.  Serve alone or over pasta, rice or with a side of new boiled potatoes. Garnish with some fresh basil leaves minced and freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Easy – Right?!

Delicious?  You’re going to love it!

Lemon Poppy Seed Biscotti

lemon poppy seed biscotti cover

Yesterday was the first day of Spring…

lemon poppy seed biscotti

and it snowed here in Mars!

lemon poppy seed biscotti 3

So I decided to make something bright and sunny and lemony…

lemon poppy seed biscotti 2

to dunk in my steaming cup of coffee by the warmth of a fire.

I’ve never made biscotti before, so decided it would be fun to try.  I love poppy seed, and it is so wonderful with lemon.

I found and slightly adapted a recipe from Lynn at FreshAprilFlowers, and I really enjoyed it.

This would make a wonderful Easter or hostess gift for coffee and tea lovers.

Lemon Poppy Seed Biscotti

Ingredients:lemon poppy seed biscotti cover
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • zest of one lemon
  • 1 Tablespoon butter, melted
  • 3 Tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • juice of one lemon, divided
  • 1 and ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
  • Egg Wash: 1 large egg, beaten with remaining lemon juice
Directions:

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place sugar in a medium bowl and add the lemon zest. Using your fingers, rub the zest into the sugar until all of the zest has been incorporated and most of the sugar is pale yellow. Whisk in the butter, oil, egg, vanilla extract, and 2 teaspoons of the lemon juice.

In a large bowl, toss together flour, baking powder, salt, and poppy seeds. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, and mix until combined.

Turn dough out onto baking sheet and pat dough into a rectangle about ½” thick ( approximately 6″ x 7 ½”.   The dough will be a bit dry and crumbly, but can be pressed together.

Brush egg wash on top and on sides of the dough.  Bake for 20 minutes or until the top and sides are lightly browned. Remove from the oven, but do not turn off the heat.

Place baking sheet on a wire rack and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Once the dough is cool enough to touch, cut into 1″ thick slices using a sharp knife. Cut these 1″ slices in half, making a horizontal slice down the center. Set slices cut sides up on the baking sheet. Return to the oven to bake for 6 minutes. Remove from oven, turn biscotti over, and bake the other side for 6 more minutes.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 3 minutes on the baking sheet (cookies will become crunchy as they cool). Transfer biscotti to a wire rack to cool completely.

Store biscotti in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks or in freezer for up to 3 months.

Enjoy dunking this delicious treat in a cup of your favorite coffee, tea, or hot cocoa!

Jodi

Chocolate and Raspberry Custard Dessert in a Jar

chocolate and raspberry custard in a jar dessert

We celebrated my youngest son, Nick’s birthday yesterday.  I was excited to try to recreate a recipe he recently had and loved at Firebird’s Wood Fired Grill restaurant a month or so ago while traveling.

chocolate and raspberry custard in a jar dessert 2

So instead of a birthday cake this year, I made these beautiful, decadent treats for his dessert.  He loved it and said I aced it.  Momma’s heart is happy.  This dessert is beautiful and delicious and will make any occasion special.

It is so worth the time to create a magical, delicious dessert.  And the beauty of it is that it can be made a day ahead of time and assembled right before you serve it for an amazing treat.

I know there is someone on your “list” who would do almost anything for one of these!

Chocolate and Raspberry Custard in a Jar

Ingredients:chocolate and raspberry custard in a jar dessert

1 cup heavy cream
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup milk
1 cup Greek yogurt
1 – 2.35 oz pkg instant chocolate pudding mix
4 oz raspberry sauce (made by straining fresh 6 oz raspberries through a sieve with 1 Tbsp sugar)
16 fresh raspberries for garnish
chocolate granola for topping (recipe follows)
Whipped cream
4 – 6oz Mason jars

Directions:

Place heavy cream in pot on medium high heat, and bring to a boil. Turn off heat, and add chocolate chips.  Whisk until smooth and chocolate is completely melted. Set aside and cool to room temperature.  Reserve 1/2 cup of the chocolate ganache.  Mix milk, yogurt and remaining chocolate ganache (other than 1/2 cup) in a mixing bowl. Stir in the pudding mix until fully incorporated.  Pour 5 oz. of custard into each Mason jar or dessert dish.  Top with  1oz reserved ganache per jar.  Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.  Top with raspberry sauce, vanilla whipped cream, fresh raspberries and chocolate granola.  Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint.

And the chocolate granola….

O M G!

This is a treat in and of itself!

I might be able to live on just this.

Make it to accompany the Chocolate and Raspberry Custard in a Jar Dessert or to top yogurt , ice cream, or to just toss in your mouth as a yummy snack.

chocolate granola

Oats and almonds and walnuts coated with cocoa and agave nectar and drizzled with semi-sweet chocolate….

Heaven in a bite!

chocolate granola 2

Chocolate Granola

Ingredients:chocolate granola
2 cups of Old Fashioned Oats
1 Cup of Sliced (or slivered) Almonds
1 Cup of Chopped Walnuts
1/4 cup of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/3 cup Sugar
1/4 cup of Agave Nectar (you can also use Maple Syrup)
1/4 cup  Butter
1/2 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

In a small saucepan, melt agave nectar and butter on medium-low heat.

In a large bowl, combine oats, nuts, cocoa, sugar and melted butter mixture to coat well.

Spread the mixture in a single layer on a baking stone or sheet, and bake for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top.

Allow mixture to cool completely.  Serve over Chocolate and Raspberry Custard Dessert, ice cream, yogurt, or enjoy as a snack.

Adapted from a recipe from Laura in the Kitchen

And here is the birthday “boy” with his birthday dessert.

Nick 26

Happy Birthday Nick!  You have made the past 26 years more joyful than you will ever know.  I wish you love and happiness and as much chocolate and raspberry custard as your heart desires.

Cookie Butter Cinnamon Chip Cookies

cookie butter cinnamon chip cookies

Have you discovered the amazingness of Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter yet?  (It’s quite similar to Biscoff spread, which I also absolutely adore!)

cookie butter cinnamon chip stack

I knew there had to be an EXTRAordinary cookie to make with this magical spread, so I went a googling and discovered a great recipe to start with at the wonderful Averie Cooks blog.

cookie butter cinnamon chip cookie

These cinnamony, gingergread biscuity, ooey-gooey brown sugary in the center, crispy crunchy on the outside little gems of deliciousness may just be my new favorite cookie ever!

Bake them if you dare!

Cookie Butter Cinnamon Chip Cookies

  • Servings: 2 1/2 dozen
  • Print

Ingredients:cookie butter cinnamon chip cookies

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter or Biscoff Spread
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter (softened)
  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 bag Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips

Directions:

Cream the egg, Cookie Butter, butter, brown sugar, and vanilla on medium-high speed of an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 4-5 mins.

Add flour, cornstarch, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.  Mix on low speed until just incorporated, about 1 min.  Fold in cinnamon chips.

Make 1 ½ inch balls from the cookie dough, place on a cookie sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 3 hours before baking. Do not bake with warm dough because cookies will spread and bake thinner and flatter. Chilling the dough is a must.

Preheat oven to 350F.  Place cookie balls on baking stone or sheet, spaced at least 2 inches apart, and bake for 8-9 mins, or until edges have set and tops are just beginning to set. Do not over-bake.

Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5-10 minutes before removing and transferring to a rack to finish cooling.

Enjoy!

Cheers & Hugs,
Jodi

Cauliflower & Fennel Au Gratin

Cauliflower and Fennel Au Gratin

I had never cooked anything with fresh fennel before and really wanted to try.  I picked one up at the grocery store having no clue what I was going to do with it.

The other night, when trying to decide what vegetable I was going to serve with dinner and knowing I still had this fennel bulb in the fridge along with a fresh head of cauliflower, I decided to “google” and see if there was a recipe combining the two.

I came upon this one, and oh what a winner it is!

Cauliflower and Fennel Au Gratin 2

This would be a lovely vegetable to serve for company, take to a potluck, or just enjoy for dinner.  The fennel (which smells like anise and is kind of licoricey) is mild, yet full-flavored and holds up nicely in the dish.  Don’t be afraid to try it, even if you say you don’t like licorice.  It is a lovely vegetable that I’m looking forward to using again in other dishes – cooked and raw.

I’m sure you could make this with just the cauliflower too, but I loved what the fennel added to it.  And just a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg made it really sing.

I hope you’ll give it a try.  Enjoy!

Cauliflower & Fennel Au Gratin

Ingredients:Cauliflower and Fennel Au Gratin

1/4 cup butter
1 head cauliflower, broken into florets
1 large fennel bulb, cored, trimmed, and cut into 1/4-inch slices plus 1/2 cup chopped fronds (the green ferny part)
2 Tbsp  flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 cup whipping cream, half & half, or milk (even skim milk is fine)
1 cup (4 oz)  shredded Swiss cheese (or your favorite)
2/3 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Directions:

Preheat oven to 450º F.  Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat; add cauliflower, and sauté 4 min.  Add fennel slices, and sauté 4-5 more min. or until tender. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with flour, salt, and nutmeg; add fennel fronds, and lightly toss together.

Spoon into a prepared 2-quart baking dish. Pour cream over mixture. Sprinkle with Swiss cheese, bread crumbs, and Parmesan cheese.

Bake at 450º for 20 minutes or until top is browned and crispy.

Bailey’s Irish Cream Chocolate Mud Cake

Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake cutting

Do you every just get a “hankering” for something?  Something you don’t usually have, but you just get stuck in your mind that you really, really, really want?!

That’s how I was feeling this past week about chocolate cake.  And chocolate cake is not something I usually make/eat/crave.

Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake unfrosted

But – there was no getting it out of my head, so what’s a girl to do?!  Bake cake!

And when I found this recipe for a “boozy” chocolate cake – well – even better!  But dang, it was in metric measurements, and try as I could to search for it in U.S. equivalents, no luck.  So I postponed doing it the first day I thought of it, but then just bit the bullet the next day and converted it myself.  I’m not sure if I converted exactly or correctly, but it turned out absolutely amazing!

Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake adding ganache

Oh Dear Me!  This is a real treat for the hankering!  It is rich and dense and chocolately and smothered in a decadent Bailey’s chocolate ganache!   I only needed a few bites to satisfy.

Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake sliced

Hubby loved it too!

After our couple of bites/slices, however, I decided to put it in the freezer to save for special occasions or special guests.  I’m guessing it will freeze well (as all cakes do), and be just the thing to pull out and slice when “needed!”

Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake slice

So here it is – the Bailey’s Irish Cream Chocolate Mud Cake – converted for us U.S. bakers and also in Metric equivalents.

Are you craving chocolate cake yet?!  Grab that bottle of Bailey’s and get baking!

Baileys Chocolate Mud Cake

Ingredients:

Cake:Baileys Irish Cream Chocolate Cake adding ganache

  • 1 1/3 sticks butter (10.5 Tbsp) or 150 grams
  • 3.5 oz or 100 grams dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup or 100 grams sugar
  • 1/2 cup or 100 grams brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup or 50 grams  cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup or 180ml Baileys Irish Cream Whiskey
  • 1 1/3 cups or 170 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsps baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 eggs, room temperature

Baileys Ganache:

  • 7 oz or 200 grams good quality dark chocolate,  chopped
  • 3/4 – 1 cup or 200ml Baileys Irish Cream (you can also do 1/2 cream and 1/2 Bailey’s if you don’t want it quite so “boozy,” but what the heck?!)
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 – 1 1/2 Tbsp or 15 grams butter, softened

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325° F (160°C). In a pan over low heat, melt the butter, chocolate, sugars, cocoa powder and Baileys. When chocolate and butter has melted, whisk together to combine making sure to get rid of any lumps of sugar or cocoa powder. Remove from heat and leave cool for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, grease and line an 8″ (20-21cm) round cake pan.

Mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and set aside. Add the eggs to the slightly cooled chocolate mixture and whisk to combine. Gently fold in the sifted flour mix until free of lumps.

Scrape into cake pan and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean (Be cautious, however, as this is one cake you don’t want to over-bake so better to be a little under than over). The top of the cake will have some beautiful cracks.  This is normal for a mud cake, and you will be covering it with a lovely and oh so concealing ganache anyway!

Remove cake from oven and cool in pan for 10 minutes before removing and cooling completely on wire rack.

To make the ganache, heat the Bailey’s and the salt to a simmer in a pan (be careful to not get the heat too high and catch the alcohol on fire like I did!).  Remove from heat and add the chocolate.  Stir until completely incorporated, and then stir in the butter.

Set aside at room temperature and cool until it is thick enough to spread over your cooled cake (or if you are as impatient as me, put in the freezer to cool more quickly).  Gently stir the ganache occasionally as it cools to keep the temperature even and the ganache smooth.

When it is cooled and thickened, spread the ganache on the top of your cake and let it drip down the sides.

Enjoy!

Looking back…. looking forward

As I was contemplating what I wanted to write for my blog post today, I was feeling very reflective.
It’s hard to believe that I have been sharing a post every day for the past year and three quarters.
Today is Post #692 of me rambling on about “cherishing the moments” at “life in between.”
Since there are A few more of you that visit here today than did on May 18, 2014, I thought I would share my first post again.
I was thinking about what drives me to post every day.  I’d like to think it is simply what I want to say… what I want to share…
but if I am being really honest…. I have to admit I care about what you want to hear, see, read.   We’ve kind of become friends along the way.
As I was reading through my first post, I reminisced…..
Jackie, my sweet “almost” daughter, who really encouraged me to start this blog will be having a baby very soon.  We are looking forward to welcoming Baby Ben into our McHendy family.
I still love to bake and cook (though I have never tried french macaroons again).   I have shared many recipes along the way, and it has been fun to hear from many of you that have tried the recipes and enjoyed.

Sharing my home is still one of my greatest joys.   After all, it is the thing I love best about my home – the people I share it with.

My “crafting” phase of late has evolved into watercolor painting (remember my very first ever watercolor – April 4, 2015?!).  So many of you have been so encouraging and supportive.

I am having so much fun with my daughter-in-law, Colleen, as we create our new McKinneyx2Design business, and I am so grateful to so many of you who have supported us through purchases and by helping spread the word.

I miss my little Mikey as I remember him through these photos.  What a joy he was.  He really taught us the love of a pet.  If it weren’t for Mikey, we wouldn’t have Charlie, and we would have missed out on so much joy and love.

So here’s the first post (again), and if you wouldn’t mind indulging me……. would you share with me what your favorite posts are?  Is it the recipes?  Is it the photography?  Is it the “art” (watercolor, cards), is it the poetry or writing, family stories, crafts?   Should I narrow it to just one of them?  Or should I continue this crazy, scattered, who knows what you are going to see tomorrow “lifestyle” blog?

———————-

the first post – so how do I begin?

So I have a good idea what I want to write about… for the most part. My BFF’s oldest daughter told me I should start a “lifestyle” blog.  I guess she thinks my life is interesting….  or at least enough that one or two people might want to read about things I do….  (Hopefully I’ll have at least one subscriber – Jacyln Rae – hint hint!)

Or maybe she just thinks I would enjoy doing it, and that is enough.

Hmmm…. I think I like that…

You know…. that’s one of the perks of growing – err – older and wiser – you get to the point where you realize you can do things just because you want to. Yes – there are those things most of us HAVE to do – like paying bills, doing laundry, working – you get the gist – but what do you like to do in between all that?

That’s the real “living” part.

“Life in between” can mean so many things…

The main reason I titled this blog with it is because I want to share the things I choose to do in between the things I “have” to do.

It can also be a stage of life that is in between stages – and aren’t they all?!

Right now – I’m kind of in between the mom stage and the empty nester and grandma stage. And Oh I Can’t Wait to be a Grandma!  (No hint hint Jake and Colleen – whenever you are ready…  well – maybe a little hint hint)

I think I was born to “mother.”  And oh poor everyone around me that I “mother” – sorry! It’s just in my DNA – I want to nurture, I want to comfort, I want to make happy. Could be worst things -right?!  (clear throat)  But don’t ask my boys…

So anyway – the things I love to do “in between” the things I have to do – that’s what I want to share with you here.

French Macarons

I love to bake.  I love how it makes the house smell.  I love how it makes people feel when they bite into a buttery, chocolately, caramely yummy thing.  I love surprising someone with a special treat of something they love.  Here is a picture of my first attempt at French Macarons.  I was so excited these testy little buggers turned out.  Not sure I’ll ever make them again – so much work – so temperamental – and what if they don’t turn out the next time?  Was it beginner’s luck?  I’ll just believe I’ve MASTERED them….  and leave it at that….

I also love to decorate – my home that is.  And it’s not all about it being House and Garden perfect for those of you that know me and are thinking  “Jodi – you are NOT an interior decorator!”

My ultimate goal (in decorating) is to create a place that is warm and welcoming.  A place where someone can just drop by (no formal invitations needed around here) and feel comfortable and welcomed and loved.  No shoes off in my house.  So what if the carpet has stains…  Those stains represent someone who I shared my home with or that spilled a drink or our dog who came in after a rainy spring day – so what…  I grew up in a house that was House and Garden perfect… that meant NO SHOES inside…  it meant that you could see sweeper marks in the carpet from the daily vacuum…. it meant that you could literally eat off the garage floor if you were so inclined because it was so clean….  and that’s all good…  Mom was an awesome “cleaner”…  but it’s not me.  I want comfort, warmth, welcoming.  I want my house to feel like your favorite worn slippers or most comfortable fleece hoodie or your “go to” black yoga pants.  That’s what trips my trigger.

Here’s a little peek at our home – and that’s my little buddy “Mikey” who is never far from my side.  After this LONG COLD winter, it was so nice to see the daffodils and grass recently.

signs of spring

And I also love to craft.  It’s been various things through the years…  I’ve tried knitting and crocheting and cross-stitching, tole painting, slate painting, wood crafts, and ceramics.  My most recent crafting obsession is papercrafting – stamping, coloring, cutting, punching, pasting, tying – anything with paper and ink.  I guess it feels comforting being that I (and so many of us) spend so much time on the computer.  It feels extra special to create and send a special handmade something to someone and hope they realize the time and love you put into it – just for them. Here’s a card I made for a very special cousin and friend – Oh Rob! (I’m sure you’ll hear more about him in coming posts). Oh how I love that guy – and his amazingly talented and loving wife and superhero to me, Joyce.  Rob’s “One Little Word” this year is “reflection,” so I wanted to create a birthday card acknowledging and celebrating “reflection.”

rob reflection birthday card 2014

And then – I love to photograph it all.  Dear hubby got me my first good camera for Christmas this year – and I think he might regret it….  I know my boys do…. but I just love taking photographs of crazy, silly, normal, everyday things.   Not a trained professional by any means – not even a class – haven’t even read the whole manual (sorry Patty – I will get there!) – just have fun with it and love seeing what it captures.  My BFF, Jill, honored me with the privilege of capturing  her daughter, Jackie’s bridal shower recently – oh what fun that was – and even allowed me to do a “photo shoot” with her in-laws (I think George and Alice are going to be more famous than all of us) for a work campaign.

Recently, while Marty (that’s the dear hubby’s name) was cutting grass, I was doing very important things like taking pictures of dandelions and bees on them….  and HE snapped this little gem with his phone while on the tractor…. Not flattering – but yep – that about sums it up.  The silly things I do in my life in between…..

So we’ll see how this goes….  I now have my first post under my belt.

And now I have #692 under my belt….
